(UTV | COLOMBO) – A state of emergency has been declared in Sri Lanka with effect from yesterday (01) to control the country’s dire economic situation and the unrest of the people.
The gazette notification has been issued by President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.
The Gazette said in a statement that it was “optimistic” that the people of Sri Lanka would do so in order to ensure the safety of the people, the peace of the country and the provision of essential services to the people.
Section 2 of the Public Safety Ordinance states that the provisions of Part 2 of the Ordinance should come into force throughout Sri Lanka with effect from 01st of April, taking into account the principles enshrined in it.
Meanwhile, the police curfew law that had been in force in the Upper Province since midnight yesterday has been lifted by 6am today.
