(UTV | COLOMBO) – The All Ceylon Joint Economic Centres says vegetable farmers and traders are facing a severe crisis as a result of the prevailing diesel and gas shortage in the country.
Treasurer of the Manning Market and Joint Economic Centres Association Nimal Attanayake said prices of vegetables have reduced as the hotels have closed due to the gas shortage adding the sale of vegetables such as carrot and leeks has also been hampered.
Attanayake noted a reduction in people purchasing vegetables has been observed while the amount of vegetables arriving in Colombo has also reduced.
He further said as a result of the diesel shortage, transportation costs have increased sharply and in an unjust manner.
Attanayake said no faction has intervened to resolve the issue or provide diesel concessions to reduce transportation costs.
He added the present situation may result in a serious crisis.
