Bus operators bemoan fuel shortage

(UTV | COLOMBO) – The Lanka Private Bus Owners’ Association says the government must intervene to actively carry out the diesel distribution program.

The President of the Association Gemunu Wijeratne said buses will continue to operate today without inconveniencing the passengers despite the prevalent fuel crisis.

Wijeratne said steps were also taken yesterday to supply diesel to several private buses through the Sri Lanka Transport Board depots in Colombo, suburbs, and outstation areas.

The President of the Association noted 5,000 buses will be in operation today.

He said they were only able to obtain a limited stock of diesel; however, they are in possession of fuel sufficient for two days to operate short-distance services.

The President of the Association said one or two shipments cannot solve the fuel crisis adding at least four vessels carrying fuel shipments are required.

Wijeratne requested the government to take necessary steps to ensure that they receive fuel.
