Health unions to resume island-wide token strike today

(UTV | COLOMBO) –  The island-wide strike by health professionals over several demands is set to resume at 8am today.

The health unions said the 48-hour token strike will be worked off from 8am today till 8am on Friday.

They also informed that services at state hospitals could be disrupted owing to the strike.

However, the strike will not be worked off at several hospitals including the Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital, maternity, cancer, and kidney hospitals, the National Blood Bank, the National Institute of Infectious Diseases and the National Institute of Mental Health.

Convener of the Federation of Health Professionals Ravi Kumudesh conveyed their regret to the public over any possible inconveniences.

Kumudesh said they received a special request from the National Institute of Mental Health highlighting the impact of the trade union action on its patients, adding therefore the executive committee of the Federation of Health Professionals agreed not to carry out the trade union action at the hospital.

He said emergency and essential services will continue across the country.
