Compared to pandemic-era blockbusters, the video game adaptation is tracking 12% above “Eternals,” 18% above “Black Widow” and 21% higher than “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” at similar points in their theatrical rollouts in those markets.
That suggests it could perform better than expected, certainly better than the reviews paint the film. The film also beat Kenneth Branagh’s star-studded murder mystery “Death on the Nile” which earned $20.7 million despite opening in three times as many overseas territories (47).
While the games have scored some stellar reviews throughout their run, the film isn’t sitting so pretty with the first batch of reviews giving it a 50% (5.3/10) on Rotten Tomatoes.
Comments criticize a ‘made by committee’ approach to the film, several make note of how little the film resembles the games bar some references, though others say its divertingly pleasant enough. Holland is praised for his commitment to the role of treasure hunter Nathan Drake, but he’s about the only one.
The film has its domestic debut on February 18th along with opening in Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico and South Korea. Armed with a $120 million budget, it needs to do fairly well should Sony hope to make a franchise.
