Drastic measures proposed to cut on fuel imports

(UTV | COLOMBO) – Energy Minister Udaya Gammanpila has informed the Cabinet that steps should be taken to reduce the consumption of fuel as the monthly import bill of fuel has increased to US$ 450 million.

He has suggested holding Government and private sector meetings via Zoom, designating one day of the week as Work from Home (WFH), and taking measures to ease traffic congestion to save fuel.

He has also proposed to commence the work of the new fuel refinery and expedite fuel exploration work in the seas off the country. The Minister has pointed out that about 45 percent of the export income goes to fuel imports. He has pointed out that the fuel requirement has constantly gone up in the country even though the fuel prices were increased twice recently.
