Schools in Sri Lankan remote areas lack basic facilities

(UTV | COLOMBO) – “Eluwankulama” is an area that suffered from the terrible war between the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE about a decade ago.

While politicians pay less attention to such areas situated far away from the capital, the people, who live with extreme difficulties and minimum facilities, are attacked today by the economic crisis and most of them are low-income earners.

Eluwankuama Vidyalaya School is the only school in this area, which is very far from the city.

It educates about 200 students, and about 20 teachers provide their service.

The school has significant problems; including the lack of classrooms, no library or laboratory, and the sports equipment and playgrounds are not in good condition either, in addition to wild elephants that roam frequently and they have caused damage to the school.

Lack of transport facilities and accommodation for teachers from remote areas is another major problem, due to that, teachers are suffering a lot.

However, parents and teachers are working hard to keep the school going, calling the authorities to develop the school so that they could get a quality education.
