Court order to replace substandard gas cylinders free of charge

(UTV | COLOMBO) – The Court of Appeal today ordered Litro and Laugfs Gas companies to replace domestic gas cylinders that consumers have at home, with gas cylinders that are up to standard, free of charge.

Court also issued directives to only issue gas cylinders that are up to standards set by the Sri Lanka Standards Institution to the market in future.

The decision was conveyed when the writ petition filed by civil society activist Nagananda Kodituwakku seeking compensation for victims of the recent gas leak explosions was taken up for a fourth consecutive day today.

The petition was taken up before a bench comprising judges Ruwan Fernando and Sampath Wijeratne.

Gas companies informed Court that steps will be taken to increase the composition of propane in domestic gas cylinders to 30 percent, from 20 percent.

The petition will be taken up for consideration once again on the 26th of January.
