(UTV | COLOMBO) – Nursing schools to be upgraded islandwide

Health Minister Dr. Keheliya Rambukwella has instructed relevant authorities to look into the shortcomings in nursing schools and improve their facilities. Minister Rambukwella recently instructed the Ministry officials to prepare the necessary arrangements to upgrade the facilities at all nursing schools islandwide. Accordingly, the Minister instructed officials to identify all the shortcomings in them and submit a report to him as soon as possible. The facilities of 17 functional nursing colleges islandwide would be upgraded and steps would be taken to find out their shortcomings as soon as possible and provide immediate and long-term solutions to them.

Minister Rambukwella said that it is important to pay attention to this as all the training of the nursing staff who play a vital role in the health service is provided by the nursing schools. The Minister also instructed to look into the shortcomings of the nursing schools separately and to provide accurate information especially on their infrastructure and staff shortage. It was revealed that the construction work of the new buildings of the Matara and Kalutara Nursing Schools constructed under the Deyata Kirula project in 2014 could not be completed and the Minister instructed to complete the work expeditiously and provide these buildings for academic purposes.

In addition, discussions were held regarding the construction activities of the Nursing Colleges in Galle and Kandy and the Minister instructed that they should be completed as soon as possible. Secretary to the Ministry of Health Maj. Gen. Dr. Sanjeewa Munasinghe, Director General of Health Services Dr. Asela Gunawardena, principals of nursing colleges, directors of nursing college affiliated hospitals and officials of the Health Ministry were also present on the occasion.
