Attendance of teachers and students high in schools

(UTV | COLOMBO) – The attendance of teachers and students is reportedly at satisfactory level today with academic activities resuming for primary sections from Grade One to Five.

Students have been granted permission to attend school in uniforms or suitable attire.

Meanwhile the Teachers’ and Principals’ Trade Union Alliance said it is prepared to launch an indefinite strike if the need arises, after teachers of all schools across the island report to duty.

Taking to social media General Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers Service Union Mahinda Jayasinghe therefore called for a favourable solution to be provided for teachers’ and principals’ salary anomalies promptly.

Jayasinghe meanwhile said a census must be conducted if online education activities need to be carried out.

He added such a census must be carried out as all children do not have facilities to pursue education online.

The CTSU General Secretary claimed a large number of children are at a loss due to online education, and questioned who will take responsibility.

Jayasinghe stated principals of some schools are forcing teachers to engage in online teaching, and issuing timetables in this regard.

He said if principals are prepared to provide online teaching facilities for all students of the school, it is fair, adding however it is unjust to do so without providing the necessary facilities.

Mahinda Jayasinghe noted although the strike was ended, the trade union action will continue, and will be intensified if needed, when teachers of all schools are summoned to work.
