FR filed against transfer of Yugadanavi shares

(UTV | COLOMBO) – General Secretary of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya Parliamentarian Ranjith Madduma Bandara has filed a Fundamental Rights petition before the Supreme Court seeking an injunction order to suspend the decision reached by the Cabinet of Ministers to transfer 40 percent of the shares in the Kerawalapitiya Yugadanavi Power Plant to a US firm.

The Cabinet of Ministers, including Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Secretary to the Cabinet, the Secretary to the Ministry of Finance and the Attorney General have been named as respondents. The respondents also include the US firm New Fortress.

The petition seeks an injunction order restricting the firm being awarded the contract to supply liquid gas.

The petitioner contends that the decision of the Cabinet to transfer 40% of the Sri Lankan Government owned shares in the Kerawalapitiya Yugadanavi Power Plant to the American Company was not justified.

MP Madduma Bandara requested the Supreme Court to rule that the decision reached by the Cabinet of Ministers to transfer the relevant shares without any fair study violates the Fundamental Rights of the people of the country.
