North Korea Responds To “Squid Game”

(UTV | COLOMBO) – The buzz over Netflix’s hit South Korean series “Squid Game” has gotten so loud that the country’s neighbours of the dictatorship of North Korea have heard about it… and weighed in.

Reuters and The Wall Street Journal report that North Korean state-run propaganda site Arirang Meari has run an article on the high-concept survival drama which they say depicts the “sad reality of a beastly South Korean society in which human beings are driven into extreme competition and their humanity is being wiped out”.

They go on to say:

“‘Squid Game’ gained popularity because it exposes the reality of South Korean capitalist culture. [It’s] a world where only money matters – a hell-like horror… Corruption and immoral scoundrels are commonplace… [an] unequal society where moneyless people are treated like chess pieces for the rich.”

North Korea has reportedly been imposing stiff fines or prison for those caught enjoying South Korean entertainment.

“Squid Game” is proving Netflix’s most popular original series ever in its initial release and has been sampled by 111 million members in the 25 days since its premiere.
