Bus fares could increase if fuel prices are raised

(UTV | COLOMBO) – The Ministry of Transport says in the event fuel prices increase, bus fares could also likely increase.

State Minister Dilum Amunugama speaking to media in Kandy, said there is no intention of increasing bus fares or diesel prices at present.

The Minister said it would be more practical for the government to bear the loss of diesel prices and refrain from increasing bus fares in the event of a fuel price revision.

State Minister Amunugama said if diesel prices increase then with hesitancy, they will have to consider an increase.

He added during the previous fuel hike bus owners requested an increase in fares, claiming they didn’t approve a hike owing to the coronavirus situation in the country and instead provided concessions to bus owners.

However, State Minister Amunugama admitted that an increase in diesel prices will pose a serious concern adding that if the situation does arise discussions will be held before reaching a decision.
