Giving children arbitrary medication can cause other side effects

(UTV | COLOMBO) – It is not appropriate to give vitamin C tablets to children at the whim of the parents, consultant paediatric intensivist at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children, Dr Nalin Kitulwatte said.

He said social media posts were carrying messages saying that it is suitable to give Vitamin C tablets to children these days.

Despite mentioning various types of medicine on social media, Dr. Kitulwatte said that no medicine should be given to children without medical advice.

“Giving children arbitrary medication can cause other side effects,” the doctor said.

“What we are saying is that parents should not give children vitamin C as they wish, because no one knows how much vitamin C should give children. If children have fever, give them the prescribed dose of paracetamol. If there is more than a fever, it is better to rush to a hospital or visit a doctor and give only the medicines that can be given only according to the doctor’s instructions, “Dr. Kitulwatte added.
