Welikada prison inmates start rooftop protest again

(UTV | COLOMBO) – A group of inmates on death row at the Welikada Prison have begun another rooftop protest, demanding authorities to commute their death sentences to life imprisonment.

Several inmates climbed a roof of the prison and protested for two consecutive days before the strike was called off last afternoon. However, the hunger strike was launched once again last night by death row inmates at the Welikada Prison.

Media Spokesman of the Department of Prisons Commissioner Chandana Ekanayake said the hunger strike launched by inmates of the Welikada and Mahara Prisons is continuing.

The inmates demand a common policy for all inmates when issuing pardonings.
