Navy apprehends Kerala cannabis worth around Rs. 39 million with 2 suspects

(UTV | JAFFNA) – A special search operation conducted by the Navy in the beach area of Karampan, Kayts yesterday (17) led to the seizure of about 130 kilogrammes and 760 grams of Kerala cannabis, a dinghy and apprehension of 2 suspects.

The Navy has stepped up patrols in island waters to crack down on a wide range of nefarious activities including trafficking of drugs by sea.

During a similar operation, the Northern Naval Command managed to make this apprehension where a suspicious dinghy which approached the Karaampan Beach was searched and 4 packages containing Kerala cannabis about 130 kilogrammes and 760 grams were found in it. Apart from that, the dinghy and 2 suspects aboard were also taken into Naval custody.

Meanwhile, the street value of the seized consignment of Kerala cannabis is believed to be over Rs. 39 million.

The suspects were identified as residents of Kayts and Pesalai, aged 26 and 31. The accused along with the haul of narcotics and the dinghy were handed over to the Kayts Police for onward legal action.
