Salawa Explosion: Residents call for report on compensation

(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – Residents of Salawa have requested the government to submit a report under the Right to Information Act on recommendations regarding compensation granted to those who experienced damages to property and possessions as a result of the explosion at the army camp in Salawa.

Residents of Salawa affected by the incident said they unanimously decided to submit an application to obtain information regarding the matter tomorrow at the Valuation Department.

Speaking to a prominent online news portal in the island, Secretary Chandana Sooriyaarachchi said the relevant compensatory fee granted to those affected by the explosion at the Army Camp was considerably unreasonable.

Sooriyaarachchi said the residents of Salawa were subjected to danger and lost property and possessions when the explosion occurred.

He said an issue has arisen as to how assessments were made over the loss of property and damages caused to houses in the vicinity of the blast.

Accordingly, the Secretary said the residents are set to file their requests at the Valuation Department tomorrow at 10.30am.
