Flood warning issued as water level of Kelani Ganga on the rise

(UTV | COLOMBO) – The Department of Irrigation has warned that the water level of the Kelani River are currently rising to ‘Flood Level’ due to the prevailing heavy rainfall.

An average rainfall of around 125 mm has fallen in the upper catchment areas of the Kelani River Basin during last 24 hours ending at 9.00am today.

According to the analysis on experienced rainfall and current water levels of river gauges in Kelani River, water level at Hanwella could be increased up to 9.00 m and water level at Nagalagam Street could be increased up to 6.60 ft within next 6 to 16 hours. It is warned that there is a high possibility of considerably increasing current Flood Situation in lowline areas of Kelani River Valley situated in Dehiovita, Ruwanwella, Seethawaka, Dompe, Homagama, Kaduwela, Biyagama, Kolonnawa and Wattala D/S Divisions.

Residents of the area and drivers of vehicles passing through the area are requested to be vigilant of the floods.

The Irrigation Department urges the Disaster Management Divisions to take necessary steps in this regard.
