Moratuwa Mayor sent to treatment centre in Negombo

(UTV | COLOMBO) – Prison officials have confined Moratuwa Mayor Samanlal Fernando to the Pallansena Coronavirus Treatment Centre in Negombo since yesterday.

Moratuwa Magistrate Uddala Suwerdurugoda remanded the Mayor till June 11 pending further investigations into an incident that occurred at the Molpe Methodist Church Centre where he had allegedly obstructed health Officials engaged in the COVID-19 vaccinating programme.

Fernando was seen in video footage obstructing officials on duty at a vaccination centre in his jurisdiction on May 27 morning.

Fernando surrendered at the Mount Lavinia Police Station following a public outcry and was subsequently arrested for obstructing the duties of the Moratuwa Medical Officer of Health (MOH) and other officials.
