Eight arrested over collecting debris from ’MV X-Press Pearl’

(UTV | COLOMBO) – Eight people have been arrested for collecting waste that was washed ashore from the burning ‘MV X-Press Pearl’ vessel, violating quarantine rules and regulations.

Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said they were arrested in the Pamunugama, Dungalpitiya, Negombo and Kochchikade police areas based on the video footage and evidence gathered from area residents.

He said two were arrested in the Dungalpitiya Police area along with a lorry while another three persons in the Pamunugama police area.

He said three more arrests have been in the Kochchikade police areas.

They would be produced before the Negombo Magistrate today, he said.
