Earthquake hits Sumatra, no tsunami threat to Sri Lanka

(UTV | COLOMBO) – An earthquake has occurred near Sumatra Island in the Indian Ocean today but it has no tsunami threat to Sri Lanka, specifically the coastal areas of Sri Lanka are declared safe, the Meteorology Department said.

The earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 on the richter scale had occurred off west coast of Northern Sumathra around 12:03pm. (6:33UTC) today.
