Human Rights Commission directs TID to submit report on Ahnaf Jazeem

(UTV | COLOMBO) – The Human Rights Commission Sri Lanka (HRCSL) has called on the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) to submit a report on Ahnaf Jazeem, a Tamil poet from Mannar, who has been in detention for 10-months.

Jazeem was arrested on 16 May 2020, after several copies of his book “Navarasam” were found in the possession of multiple individuals who were arrested in connection to the 2019 Easter attacks.

The HRCSL has directed the TID to investigate and submit a report on a complaint filed by the Young Journalists Association (YJA) about the safety and well-being of Jazeem.

The HRCSL has directed the TID in writing yesterday (01) to investigate claims made by the JLA that Jazeem is not allowed visits from his lawyers; he was bitten by a rat while in detention; and that he is being subjected to an investigation that he was not originally apprehended for.
