Operation underway targeting environmental crimes

(UTV | COLOMBO) – The Police will carry out a massive operation targeting environmental crimes to ensure environmental protection.

Police Media Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana stated that it was of utmost importance to stop environmental degradation by individuals, groups or organisations and therefore this step was taken to protect the environment for the future generations.

A special discussion in this regard was held yesterday (12) at the Suhurupaya in Battaramulla under the patronage of the Minister of Public Security, Rear Admiral Dr. Sarath Weerasekera.

The discussion was held with the participation of senior officers in the Police Service and other areas related to the environment, Government Agents, Wildlife Department officials and Divisional Secretaries.

The Minister instructed all to protect the forests and the police to assist in the protective measures, the police spokesman said.

The purpose of this is to launch a special programme to discuss and coordinate the actions to be taken in the coming year, especially on the protection of the environment.

The Sri Lanka Police is constantly conducting environmental protection operations and the Police Media Spokesman requested the public to call the hotline 1997 regarding any information on deforestation or other environmental crimes.
