Steps taken to eradicate Thalassemia – Finance Minister

(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – Minister of Finance Ravi Karunanayake states that the government has taken the necessary measures to eradicate Thalassemia in the island.

Speaking at an event held in Colombo yesterday (13th Friday), the Finance Minister said a hospital dedicated to treating Thalassemia, the first of its kind in the world, is due to be constructed in Sri Lanka.

Minister Karunanayake also said 500 million rupees has been allocated from the budget, in order to supply Thalassemia patients with necessary health facilities.

The Minister said the government has taken steps to allocate funds towards the eradication of an unfortunate disease.

He stated the Chief Prelates and even the Pope made this request when he visited the country.

The Minister said all must work to eradicate this disease so that innocent children born in the future will never have to suffer.

Minister Karunanayake stated the government has allocated 500 million rupees for this cause and is prepared to provide more in the future.
