(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – The Japanese special technical team of experts who arrived in the country to inspect Sri Lanka’s collapsed garbage dump in the capital Colombo, has warned of methane gas building up to dangerous levels in the landfill.

The technical team said the percentage of methane gas has increased 960 times in the place where the garbage dump was collapsed.

The team engaged in inspections for the second day yesterday. They initially inspected the area above the garbage dump to find out whether there was further risk of landslide. Photographs were taken from the air covering all areas of the garbage dump.

The technical team measured the methane gas in the area and confirmed that the methane is present in the area at about 16 percent.
