Officers at Colombo Prisons restricted to their quarters

(UTV | COLOMBO) – The Department of Prisons has informed all officers serving at Prisons in Colombo to remain at their official quarters for a period of two weeks.

Accordingly officers of the Welikada, Colombo Remand and Magazine prisons will not be allowed to leave the premises.

A total of 172 COVID-19 positive cases have been identified at Prisons thus far, while three inmates at the Boossa Prison were also tested positive for the virus today.

The Prisons Department stated steps will be taken to direct any inmates who test positive for coronavirus henceforth to the Kandakadu or Gallella quarantine facilities, while all female prison inmates are being directed to the Welikanda COVID-19 treatment centre.

Inmates found to have contracted the virus thus far were housed at the Welikada Prison hospital and the Pallansena and Bogambara Prisons.

Meanwhile 25 Prison officers have also been directed to isolate at their official quarters within the Angunakolapelessa prison premises as well.
