Joaquin Phoenix to play Napoleon for Scott

Joaquin Phoenix will play French military leader and emperor Napoleon Bonaparte in Ridley Scott’s new feature “Kitbag” at 20th Century Studios and Scott Free.

The project is described as an original and personal look at Napoleon’s origins and his swift, ruthless climb to emperor. This will all be viewed through the prism of his addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, Josephine.

The aim is to capture Napoleon’s famous battles, relentless ambition and astounding strategic mind. David Scarpa (“All the Money in the World”) is currently at work on the script.

Scott is currently wrapping production on “The Last Duel” in Ireland and will start production in Italy next March on “Gucci” starring Lady Gaga as the murderess Patrizia Reggiani alongside cast members Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Adam Driver and Jared Leto.

“Kitbag” is expected to be his next project immediately after “Gucci”.
