Officials quarantined after boarding ship

(UTV | COLOMBO) – A group of Colombo port officials who boarded an Indian ship for official purposes at the Colombo port and their families have been quarantined.

This is after 17 members of the Indian crew of an oil tanker on its way to the Trincomalee harbour was found to be infected with COVID-19. The head of the National Operation Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO), Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva said the oil tanker had first arrived at the Colombo port and then had left for the Trincomalee port.

Silva said the 17 members of the ship’s crew had tested COVID-19 positive during the first test.

He said two naval officers, a doctor, two other persons and their families had been quarantined.

Lt. General Shavendra Silva who is also the Army Commander was responding to questions from journalists after participating in a function held at the Kandy City Center to mark World Tourism Day.
