Pills worth Rs.24.8M seized by customs

UTV | COLOMBO – Officers of the Customs Narcotics Control Unit have seized 4,960 ecstasy pills worth Rs.24.8 million sent through passengers, at the Katunayake courier clearance centre.

Media Spokesperson Additional Director General of Customs Sunil Jayarathna said the stock of pills were concealed in a textile container, and was sent from the Netherlands to an address in Colombo 15.

Customs officials had opened the container for inspections after suspicions arose as the items were not claimed.

Officers had found the stock of pills concealed inside cardboard boxes in the container.

No suspects have been arrested over the incident as the recipient of the address is yet to be located.

Further investigations have been handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau.
