Colombo Port employees strike continues

UTV | COLOMBO – The indefinite fast launched by several employees of the Colombo Port which commenced last evening along the entrance road to the harbour continues.

The employees are protesting against alleged attempts to sell the Colombo East Container Terminal to a foreign nation or a private company.

Speaking to a prominent online news portal in the isle, the Convenor of the Joint Trade union collective to protect the Eastern Terminal of the Colombo Port, Chandrasiri Mahagamage said as efforts to discuss the matter with Prime Minister Rajapaksa on several instances failed the fasting campaign will now continue indefinitely, until the President assures that the East Terminal of the Colombo Port will remain under the jurisdiction of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority.

He noted that other trade unions and civil societies are also expected to visit the site today and called for more support from all factions to ensure their demands are met.

However, the convenor stated that all union action will not affect day to day operations at the Colombo port.
