Bus operations will be reduced by 50%-Gemunu

UTV | COLOMBO -The Lanka Private Bus Owners Association says bus operations will be reduced by 50% from Tuesday.

Chairman of the Association Gemunu Wijeratne said the number of journeys will also be reduced by 50%.

He said the decision was reached in order to cut costs and losses owing to the limited number of individuals taking public transportation.

He added operations will continue today and tomorrow as per usual.

Wijeratne said the associations called for many concessions in order to take the industry forward, claiming that none of them have been fulfilled.

He added the daily operation of a short distance bus results in a Rs.1,000 wastage and Rs.2,000 for long distance buses.

While noting that this is a serious concern, de Silva said if they continue in this manner, 15,000 buses will have to be removed from operation.

Gemunu Wijeratne added authorities have also been informed to amend bus timetables accordingly.

He said they asked for concessions, to increase bus fares, to operate according to the number of kilometres, insurance schemes, and more.
