UTV | COLOMBO – Schools in the country will be closed for another week owing to the threat of the novel coronavirus.

The Ministry of Education in a statement said following lengthy discussions, a decision was taken to recommence academic activities for Grade 11, 12 and 13 students on the 27th of July.

Director General of Health Services Dr. Anil Jasinghe has meanwhile recommended to resume academic activities for students of other classes on the 10th of August.

The Education Ministry also noted that schools within the Rajanganaya and Welikanda zones will not re-open before the 10th of August.

The Ministry said it will announce new dates to conduct the 2020 GCE Advanced Level Examination and the Grade Five Scholarship examination on Monday.

The Education Ministry said although the Director General of Health Services has ruled out the possibility social transmission in the country, since nearly 200 students and teachers from five districts have been directed to quarantine, a decision was taken to delay the re-opening of schools.

All schools in the country were closed on Monday, following the increase in coronavirus cases linked to the new Kandakadu cluster.
