Third suspect of Welikada riots case acquitted

UTV | COLOMBO – The Permanent High Court-at-Bar yesterday acquitted the third suspect in the 2012 Welikada prison riots case, Imaduwage Indika Sampath.

The order was issued by the bench comprising of Judges Gihan Kulathunga, Pradeep Hettiarachchi and Manjula Tillakaratne.

During today’s court hearing, Deputy Solicitor General Dilan Ratnayake said they are not in possession of adequate evidences to prove the charges against the third suspect in the case.

Accordingly, the bench acquitted the suspect.

The case has been filed against Former Prisons Commissioner Emil Ranjan Lamahewa and Inspector of Police Niyomal Rangajeewa attached to the Police Narcotics Bureau over the deaths of eight prison inmates within the Welikada Prison premises in 2012.

The case will be taken up for hearing once again on the 30th of July.
