IGP asked to conduct probe over assault on a Journalist

(UTV | COLOMBO) – The Director General of the Government Information Department has requested the Acting Inspector General of Police CD Wickramaratne to conduct a comprehensive and impartial investigation pertaining to the purported assault of a journalist who was covering a court hearing at the Hulftsdorp Magistrate’s court premises yesterday.

In a letter directed to the Acting IGP, Director General of the Department Nalaka Kaluwewa said all media outlets have covered the particular incident in which an individual identifying himself as a Policeman had manhandled and prevented the journalist from carrying out his duties.

The Director General has said the media person in question is a registered journalist and noted that all factions should permit such persons to carry-out their duties.

Accordingly, the Director General of the Government Information Department has requested the Acting IGP to conduct an investigation promptly into the incident.
