PM orders gantry crane installation – Union strike called off

(UTV | COLOMBO) – Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has issued orders for 03 gantry cranes to be installed at the Colombo Port with immediate effect, prompting Port employee trade unions to call off strike action in light of the positive development.

A special discussion was held between representatives of Port employee unions and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa this morning, at the Premier’s Carlton House residence in Tangalle.

Speaking to a prominent online news portal in the isle, the Co-Convenor of the All-Ceylon Port General Workers’ Union Prasanna Kalutarage said unions accordingly decided to call off their trade union action, as their demands have now been amicably resolved.

He noted that the three port employees, who climbed atop a gantry crane at the Colombo port in protest against the issue, will now also end their union action.

The protest was attributed to the failure to offload three gantry cranes from a ship docked at the Colombo Port.
