(UTV | COLOMBO) – Four officers attached to the Police Narcotics Bureau and a civilian have been arrested on charges of aiding drug traffickers and maintaining close links with underworld figures.
Police Media Spokesperson Senior Superintendent of Police Jaliya Senaratne said the group, arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department will be detained and questioned under provisions of the Prevention of Terrorism Act.
Speaking during a media briefing in Matara today, SSP Senaratne said an investigation was launched after the group was accused of maintaining close links with a drug dealer from Minuwangoda. The suspects are also accused of helping dealers to transport narcotics.
SSP Senaratne said Police has also retrieved Rs. 31.1 million while investigations have revealed that the suspects have purchased vehicles and property through the income received by engaging in the narcotic trade.
Police Media Spokesperson Senior Superintendent of Police Jaliya Senaratne added that all persons involved in the narcotic trade and underworld activities will be apprehended and punished according to the law.
He said 212 kilograms of heroin have been seized from the Southern province during the past few months. SSP Senaratne added that over 4,000 suspects have also been arrested in relation to drug offences.
He said the Police Narcotics Bureau, the CID, the Special Task Force and Intelligence Units will continue to conduct joint operations to apprehend all drug dealers and underworld figures.
