‘Many sacrifices were made to elect President’

(UTV | COLOMBO) – Minister Prasanna Ranatunga says many sacrifices were made in order to see Gotabaya Rajapaksa elected President.

Speaking at a rally in Dompe, Minister Ranatunga said those sacrifices included signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Sri Lanka Freedom Party.

The Minister revealed that he opposed a suggestion by the SLFP to field Former President Maithripala Sirisena as their candidate, and claimed that they only vied for a candidate to be fielded by the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna.

Ranatunga added he was against the decision to form an alliance with the SLFP, claiming they choose to go ahead with the decision as it made easier to reach the minorities.

He pointed out that they were part of the SLFP in the past, before they were shunned from the party.

Minister Ranatunga also revealed that District representatives of the SLFP were severely inconvenienced since Former President Maithripala Sirisena opted to contest the General Election under the symbol of the flower bud.

He stressed that they were of a fixed opinion of contesting the General Election under the symbol of the flower bud.

However he also revealed that many SLFP District representatives were claiming that Former President Sirisena betrayed the party by signing the agreement.
