Over 34,000 arrested during special raids

(UTV | COLOMBO) – Police have arrested a total of 34,489 suspects on various charges from the 6th to the 24th of June, in special raids conducted across the island.

8,461 suspects were arrested on charges of possession of narcotics.

Accordingly, 4,734 suspects were arrested in possession of heroin, 3,397 in possession of marijuana and another 330 in possession of ICE.

Meanwhile 65 individuals were also arrested in possession of weapons and firearms.

Accordingly, Police stated that 23 repeaters, 21 bore 12 guns, three pistols, three swords, two knives, 51 live ammunition and nine various other firearms were seized during raids.

Moreover nine suspects were arrested in possession of explosive materials – with 367g of explosive materials, 23 detonators and 10 hand grenades seized by Police.

Additionally, another 7,150 suspects were arrested in possession of illicit liquor, with over 379,000 litres seized during raids.

Police also apprehended 6,750 individuals who had warrants issued for their arrest, while another 12,054 suspects were arrested on various other charges as well.
