Investigation launched into match-fixing claims

(UTV | COLOMBO) – The Ministry of Sports has launched an investigation into recent claims by Former Minister of Sports Mahindananda Aluthgamage that the 2011 Sri Lanka-India Cricket World Cup final was fixed.

Secretary of the Ministry KDS Ruwanchandra said investigations commenced based on a written complaint he lodged with the Special Investigations Unit on the Prevention of Offences Relating to the Sports Act.

He said the complaint was lodged on the advice of the Minister of Sports Dallas Alahapperuma.

The complaint called on the Investigations Unit to promptly investigate the allegations.

The Sports Ministry Secretary also called for an update on developments of investigations every two weeks.

The Investigation Unit comprises a Senior Superintendent of Police and a Superintendent of Police.

A statement will be recorded from Mahindananda Aluthgamage pertaining to his allegations.
