Power cuts reported due to maintenance activity

(UTV | COLOMBO) – Authorities have temporarily disconnected one of the generators of the Norochcholai coal power plant due to a maintenance activity.

When inquired by a prominent online news portal in the isle Media Director of the Ministry of Power and Energy Sulakshana Jayawardena said accordingly the second generator of the three generators at the power plant will not be used.

Jayawardena said the second generator which has not been used since the 10th of June, has a capacity of 300 megawatts.

He added that the Norochcholai coal power plant is the biggest standalone power plant in the country.

Jayawardena noted the maintenance activity will be completed by the 17th of June and power generation at the power plant will be at full capacity thereafter.

When inquired by a prominent online news portal in the isle pertaining to power shortages reported in several parts of the island over the weekend, Media Director of the Ministry of Power and Energy Sulakshana Jayawardena noted that power supply was disrupted in several areas to facilitate essential maintenance activities.

He said essential maintenance activities could not be carried out during the months of March, April and May, as the public were asked to remain at home during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Jayawardena added maintenance activities are being carried out at present in a number of areas.
