(UTV | COLOMBO) – The Lanka Private Bus Owners’ Association says officials must take measures to formulate a stringent system for bus schedules prior to taking action against bus drivers who fail to reach the destination at the scheduled time.
When inquired by a prominent online news portal in the island pertaining to the statement issued by the Police over legal action being taken against bus drivers who disregard schedules, Chairman of the Association Gemunu Wijeratne said the bus industry will collapse further through such a measure at a time when the industry has not returned to normalcy following the COVID-19 pandemic.
He said, timetables for buses have not been formulated in a stringent manner and the matter was raised during a recent discussion with the President.
Gemunu Wijeratne stressed that timetables must be formulated promptly, based on the needs of commuters.
While claiming they cannot interfere with the police action, he said since the public transport service has not returned to normalcy and there are several issues pertaining to operating to a schedule, the implementation of the programme must be delayed.
He lauded Police for taking such action regarding private buses however noted implementing new programmes at present will lead to several issues in the industry.
