‘Election must be held in a safe environment’

(UTV | COLOMBO) – Venerable Omalpe Sobitha thera says an election should be held only in an environment in which public safety has been ensured.

Speaking to media in Embilipitiya the venerable said the public must not forget the threat of the coronavirus despite preparations for the election commencing.

He pointed out that politicians will not assist the public in fighting the pandemic, adding that this task will only be fulfilled by health sector workers.

Omalpe Sobitha thera pointed out that the Vesak and Poson festivals were celebrated without much pomp and pride this year, in a bid a to set an example to the people.

He reiterated that the country must make it a point to ensure the safety of the people above all else.

The Venerable was also of the opinion that a programme must be initiated to mitigate illegal activity within the prison complex.

He stressed that the underworld was directly connected to these incidents.

The Venerable also added that the underworld was the main cause of the drug trade where prisons are also directly connected to this cycle.

Omalpe Sobitha Thera questioned the role of the Judiciary in this regard, as he claimed that prisoners are not monitored on their sentence.

It was the Thera’s opinion that Underworld Kingpins are seeking alternate safety by residing within prisons, through the aid of the judiciary, all while working to advance their illegal schemes.

He held the political leadership responsible for this issue.

Venerable Omalpe Sobitha Thera however commended President Rajapaksa for making a statement on the matter saying that he will put a stop to these issues.
