Police assault of special needs child probed

(UTV | COLOMBO) – Investigations have been launched into the alleged assault of a 14 year old male special needs child by Police officers at a road block in Dharga Town, Aluthgama.

When inquired by a prominent online news portal in the isle from Police Media Spokesman Superintendant of Police Jaliya Senaratne confirmed that a police probe is underway, under the supervision of the Superintendant of Police of the Kalutara Police Division.

A statement has also been recorded from the father of the child.

The Police Media Spokesman stated that the investigation is being carried out with the aid of CCTV footage, further noting footage shows that although an assault is not witnessed, the conduct of the Police officers remains questionable.

Nevertheless SP Senaratne said an officer involved in the incident is yet to be interdicted.

The incident had occurred on the 25th of May during a curfew period.

The child had reportedly failed to heed Police orders to stop while travelling on a bicycle.

However when Police had stopped the child and proceeded to question him, videos published on social media show the child had behaved erratically in response, seemingly prompting several Police officers to assault him.

While the incident has generated much dialogue on social media, civil organizations are calling for a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident.
