School buses to be used for passenger transport

(UTV | COLOMBO) – The Ministry of Passenger Transport Management says school buses, buses used for excursions and tours and buses on temporary lists that seek to join passenger transportation temporarily, will be registered from today.

The registration period will be carried out by the National Transport Commission and the Sri Lanka Transport Board.

The Transport Ministry seeks to resume public transportation services from Monday, the 8th of June, after taking into consideration public behaviour, the COVID-19 situation in the country and advise issued by health authorities.

The Transport Ministry added buses are presently allowed to transport passengers according to the number of seats as a result of restrictions imposed due to COVID-19.

Discussions held yesterday revealed that there is a shortage in buses in order to meet the demand of passengers with the new guidelines in place.

Accordingly, a decision was reached to allow school buses, buses used for excursions and tours and buses on temporary lists to join services temporarily.
