Residents around Nilwala urged to remain cautious

(UTV | COLOMBO) – The Department of Irrigation has warned residents in low-lying areas of the Nilwala River to remain vigilant of rising water levels persons from tonight till tomorrow morning.

Issuing a statement, the Department said the water levels of the Nilwala River has reached spill levels considering the volume of rainfall experienced in the area.

The Panadugama gauging station measures a minor flood at 6 metres and a major flood at an indication of 7.5 metres in depth.

The Department notes that the current reading shows 5.81 metres, and also predicted showers of up to 150mm in the area at night.

Accordingly, the statement urges the public to maintain caution over possible rising water levels of the Nilwala River.
