CID probes COVID-19 fake news on social media

(UTV | COLOMBO) – The Criminal Investigations Department has launched investigations into 400 cases pertaining to the spread of misinformation via social media, related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Police said a special Police team was formed to probe all such cases.

16 suspects including a former member of the President’s staff, a Doctor, a university administrative official and a university student have been arrested thus far in this regard.

The suspects were taken into custody following investigations conducted by the Police and the CID.
