SJB condemns move to hike import tax on goods

(UTV | COLOMBO) -The Samagi Jana Balawegaya has condemned the government’s decision to increase special commodity taxes on a number of imported goods.

Former Parliamentarian Mayantha Dissanayake speaking at a media briefing said the public continues to be burdened, due to mismanagement by the government.

Dissanayake pointed out that the present government came into power on the back of various promises to reduce prices of goods.

He noted that the people elected Gotabaya Rajapaksa as President by placing their trust in his promises.

Commenting on the government’s decision to suspend the Rs.5,000 allowance to those affected by the coronavirus, Mayantha Dissanayake said the government is hesitant to provide the allowance for the month of June as they are aware the General Election will be postponed by another two months.

He predicted that the government will reduce prices of essential goods when an election is around the corner.
