Heavy rains expected

(UTV | Colombo) – Heavy rains over 100 mm are expected over several areas in the country today, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said.

Deputy Director of the DMC Pradeep Kodipili said showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Southern, Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North-western provinces.

Heavy showers above 100 mm will occur in the Nuwara-Eliya, Kandy, Matale, Ratnapura, Kegalle, Galle and Matara districts.

No damages or further incidents have been reported due to natural disasters as of this morning, he said.

Kodipili further said the landslide warning issued by the National Building Research Organization (NBRO) to the Galle, Kegalle, Kurunegala, Nuwara-eliya, Ratnapura, Colombo, Matara, Matale, Kandy and Kalutara districts has been further extended.

Naval and fishing communities have also been requested to remain vigilant and refrain from venturing into sea due to rough seas.

Meanwhile, the Department of Irrigation has issued a minor flood warning to the Ratnapura and Kalutara districts due to the rise in the water level of the Kalu Ganga as a result of heavy showers.

The Department said minor floods may occur in the Ratnapura, Elapatha and Kuruwita areas.

People living in low -lying areas in the Ratnapura and Kalutara districts have been requested to remain vigilant.
