‘Samagi Jana Balawegaya will comply with EC orders’

(UTV|COLOMBO) – The Samagi Jana Balawegaya says the alliance will comply with directives issued by health units and the Election Commission pertaining to the General Election.

Former Parliamentarian Patali Champika Ranawaka speaking at a media briefing said the decision in postponing the election cannot be made by politicians with vested interests.

He said the Election Commission must receive recommendations based on the outbreak and concerns relating to the spread of the virus.

Ranawaka added Health Ministry officials must provide recommendations to the National Election Commission adding that they will comply with all directives issued by the Commission.

He claimed that some countries such as France conducted elections, while the Democratic Party Primaries in the US were suspended. He claimed that the decision cannot be made by politicians.

The Former Parliamentarian said the decision should be taken based on recommendations issued by health sector workers and by specialists.

Referring to the Easter Sunday attacks Patali Champika Ranawaka said they were taken by surprise and didn’t have prior intel.

However he noted that this issue cannot be resolved by staging media briefings.

He said the Alliance will support all quarantine programmes and other measures that are introduced to contain the spread of the virus.

Patali Champika Ranawaka on a separate noted added the circular issued by the Secretary to the Treasury pertaining to financial regulations at a time that Parliament has been dissolved.
