Election Commission to meet health authorities

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Officials of the Election Commission are set to meet health authorities today (16) to discuss the future electoral activities with the spread of COVID-19.

At the meeting, a final decision will be taken regarding the actions to be taken on the matter.

Meanwhile, Election Commission announces that neither deposits nor nominations for the Parliamentary Election will be received today as today was declared a public holiday by the Minister of Public Administration and Home Affairs.

Deposits and nominations will be received during office hours on both the 17th and 18th of March and from 8.30 a.m. to 12.00 noon on the 19th of March, stated the Chairman of the Commission Mahinda Deshapriya.

The Election Commission will issue the Notice of Poll under Section 24 (1) of the Parliament Elections Act, No. 01 of 1981 on the 19th of March upon the finalization of matters pertaining to the nominations and objections.

It is also announced that all Returning Officers and the Deputy/Assistant Commissioners of Elections have been instructed to accept applications for postal voting until midnight on the 17th of March.
